The URV takes 80th position in the “Times Higher Education” ranking of the top 100 universities under the age of 50

The 100 under 50 ranking, which is compiled by the journal "Times Higher Education", has placed the URV in 80th position in its list of the top 100 universities in the world under the age of 50. It is the second year running that the URV features in the top 100 of this ranking, which has been conducted since 2012

The URV has consolidated its position in this ranking of the top 100 universities in the world under 50, which is calculated on the basis of thirteen indicators in the five categories of teaching, research, citations (impact of published research), internationalization (of both students and professors) and transfer of knowledge and innovation. Each of these categories is weighted accordingly when calculating the total score. Compared with the 2013-14 ranking, this time the URV has increased its score in all categories except citations, where it has dropped two points. More universities have been evaluated this year and the score of the university in 100th position is higher than last year when the URV took 66th position.

The editor of Times Higher Education, Phil Baty, has congratulated the University “for consolidating its position among the elite young universities; being in the top 100 is an important achievement”. According to staff at the journal, that this ranking shows how in a comparatively short period these universities have achieved a significant impact in areas such as teaching, research and knowledge transfer, in contract to older traditional institutions, which have had much longer to establish their reputations.

The ranking also features two other Catalan universities, the UPF (12th) and the UAB (29th), and three from the rest of Spain, the UAM (46th), the University of Vigo (88th) and the UPV (97th). First position this year has gone to the École Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne, which was in second position last year. The 100 under 50 ranking was published at Dublin City University on 29th April and can found here.

Times Higher Education uses the same methodology for its 100 under 50 ranking as it does for its World University Rankings, but places less emphasis on subjective indicators regarding academic prestige and reputation. The first 100 under 50 ranking was published in May 2012 with the aim of proving that it is possible to achieve excellence in a relatively short period of time.

Times Higher Education is weekly journal published in London and specialising in Higher Education. It is the most important publication of its kind in the United Kingdom and has a high international standing. In conjunction with Thomson Reuters, it compiles a series of international university rankings.
