Marcela Lagarde is the 51<\/span>st<\/span> honorary doctor of the URV and the thirteenth woman. Today she was awarded her honorary degree by videoconference in a ceremony that served to highlight the contributions made by the Mexican anthropologist and politician in the struggle against feminicides. The ceremony has again confirmed the close link between scientific knowledge and political changes. This is personalised in Lagarde, who in her speech argued that the feminist movement is creating mentalities, rights, freedoms, critical awareness and conceptions of the world that allow us to live better.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dolors Comas d’Argemir, emeritus professor of Social Anthropology, described Lagarde as an \u201cexcellent academic, who has left us an analytical legacy on the conditions of oppression of women\u201d, as a \u201cpolitician in her country, Mexico, and especially for her contribution to the struggle against feminicide, which has marked history.\u201d She also mentioned her role as a social activist, collaborator of feminist networks and disseminator. The three dimensions converge and complement each other, as Comas explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the academic dimension, she highlighted the doctoral thesis The Women’s Captivity<\/em><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span>an absolutely pioneering text in <\/span>women<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>Anthropology <\/span>written<\/span> from a feminist perspective\u201d in which <\/span>women<\/span> are not <\/span>the <\/span>object of study but <\/span>the <\/span>subject. The research <\/span>attempts to<\/span> \u201c<\/span>understand<\/span> the conditions of oppression and domination\u201d with \u201cthe feminist <\/span>gaze<\/span> that adds to the simple gender perspective.\u201d In her career<\/span>,<\/span> she has analysed the power relations that generate the invisibility of women, the forms of oppression <\/span>but also<\/span> their struggles and achievements.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lagarde is known for her work in the political and social sphere, for denouncing violence against women<\/span>,<\/span> explaining <\/span>the instruments to eradicate it and rais<\/span>ing<\/span> awareness in society<\/span>. As a result, she <\/span>managed to have<\/span> <\/span>femicide<\/span><\/span> included <\/span>in Mexican legislation and <\/span>classified<\/span> as a crime in the Mexican penal code. <\/span>As a member of parliament, she focused on the <\/span>struggle<\/span> to put an end to the<\/span> violence against women <\/span>and<\/span>,<\/span> to the horror of the world, she revealed that<\/span> in Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez<\/span>, among other places in Mexico and around the world<\/span>,<\/span> women were being raped and murdered<\/span> on a daily basis<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lagarde is the driving force behind the<\/span> concept<\/span> <\/span>sisterhood<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>which refers to<\/span> the commitment among women as the basis of their struggle against the phenomena of oppression, Comas explained. It is one of her contributions as an activist, spreading a transformative term because it \u201cenables spaces <\/span>to be formed <\/span>in which women can create new possibilities for life<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The feminist gaze has <\/span>made a <\/span>major<\/span> contribution<\/span> to the eradication of violence against women, in its broadest sense. <\/span>In her speech, <\/span>Lagarde <\/span>spoke <\/span>about <\/span>the <\/span>violence and oppression suffered by women. <\/span>She<\/span> also explained that the scenario <\/span>generated<\/span> by the latest pandemic has accentuated gender inequalities and injustices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFrom women<\/span>\u2019s point of view<\/span>,\u201d she argued, \u201cthere is a similarity between <\/span>the <\/span>pandemic and violence. If they are analy<\/span>s<\/span>ed <\/span>together<\/span>, <\/span>they <\/span>have similar features<\/span>,<\/span> they <\/span>fuel each other<\/span>, women <\/span>become more<\/span> fragile <\/span>and<\/span> the <\/span>progress made<\/span> between women and men for equality in democracy <\/span>weakens<\/span>\u201d<\/span>. Thus, for example, \u201c<\/span>we have re<\/span>turned to <\/span>the <\/span>antagonistic binary opposition <\/span>of <\/span>the double <\/span>working day<\/span> for women.\u201d On the other hand, <\/span>some of the <\/span>changes <\/span>made <\/span>in response to<\/span> the pandemic are those that the feminist movement had already \u201c<\/span>pursue<\/span>d<\/span> centuries ago to abolish <\/span>gender <\/span>oppression and deprivation, such as the creation of a comprehensive system of care, the development of a sustainable solidarity economy and <\/span>the<\/span> urgent <\/span>need <\/span>to <\/span>relieve<\/span> women <\/span>of their<\/span> workloads.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason<\/span>,<\/span> Lagarde made a <\/span>strong<\/span> defen<\/span>c<\/span>e of feminism, which \u201chas shown that it is urgent to <\/span>put an <\/span>end <\/span>to <\/span>a social order <\/span>that preys on<\/span> the environment, <\/span>the <\/span>economy and <\/span>the<\/span> socio-cultural heritage.\u201d From an anthropological point of view, <\/span>\u201c<\/span>the greatest contribution women as a gender <\/span>have made <\/span>to the world is feminism, <\/span>because it<\/span> creat<\/span>es<\/span> mentalities, values, rights, freedoms, critical awareness, conceptions of the world and ways of life <\/span>so that we can<\/span> live better. In fact, <\/span>this is what is sustained by <\/span>the group of intellectuals that created the paradigm of Sustain<\/span>ability in the Concept of<\/span> Human Development: M<\/span>a<\/span>rt<\/span>h<\/span>a Nussbaum, Mahbub<\/span> ul<\/span> H<\/span>aq<\/span> and Amartya Sen<\/span>. <\/span>The <\/span>l<\/span>ast <\/span>academic to be awarded an <\/span>honorary <\/span>degree<\/span> by<\/span> the URV, Lourdes <\/span>Beneria<\/span>, made a <\/span>summary of<\/span> Sen\u2019s<\/span> contribution to the feminist economy and quantified <\/span>the number of girls and women <\/span>who have been <\/span>victims <\/span>of femicide in Asia<\/span> to be<\/span> 100 million<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Marcela Lagarde finally recalled that feminism formulates and forges the cultural paradigm of human rights<\/span> as<\/span> \u201cthe notion that we are all equivalent and equal,\u201d she concluded.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a sign <\/span>that the new honorary degree holder has been accepted in<\/span>to the<\/span> URV\u2019s<\/span> scientific community, the <\/span>R<\/span>ector <\/span>gave<\/span> the <\/span>sponsor<\/span>, Dolors Comas <\/span>d’Argemir<\/span>, the <\/span>qualification<\/span> that accredits the highest distinction of the University for Marcela Lagarde, the medal and the b<\/span>i<\/span>r<\/span>etta<\/span>, as well as the attributes that <\/span>go with<\/span> the distinction: the book of science and wisdom, the ring <\/span>given as a symbol<\/span> of the privilege of sealing the opinions of science and the profession, and the white gloves.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pallar\u00e8s pointed out that the last three academics to be awarded an honorary degree by the URV, Marcela Lagarde, <\/span>Lourdes Beneria<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Esperanza Mart\u00ednez,<\/span> <\/a>from three different areas of knowledge (Anthropology, Economics and Law), have spoken out against androcentrism and for the need to find interdisciplinary solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n
