The Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) hosted the Aurora Research Council<\/a> (ARC) meeting on 29 and 30 June. The meeting brought together academic and research representatives from the member universities to evaluate the proposals submitted to the Aurora Incentive Research and Education Collaboration 2026 call<\/a>. The scheme promotes collaboration among researchers and academic teams across the Aurora Alliance by funding joint research projects, educational activities and short-term mobility for early-career researchers. This year, the main new feature is the inclusion of projects that combine research and education, further strengthening the link between knowledge generation and university teaching.<\/p>\n

A total of 45 eligible proposals were submitted by the Alliance’s nine member universities: 19 under Key Action 1, which supports collaborative research projects and, for the first time, projects integrating research and education (10 research projects and 9 combined research and education projects); 4 under Key Action 2, dedicated to thematic schools; and 22 under Key Action 3, which supports short-term research and training visits for early-career researchers. During the meeting held in Tarragona, members of the Aurora Research Council reviewed and evaluated the applications in order to prepare a funding recommendation and ranking.<\/p>\n

The call aims to achieve more than simply funding individual projects. Its broader objective is to foster new research communities across the Aurora universities, encourage new international collaborations and support initiatives with the potential to secure funding through future competitive European programmes.<\/p>\n

A total budget of \u20ac240,000 is available to fund projects under Key Actions 1 and 2, while the member universities finance the mobility grants awarded under Key Action 3. In this edition, applications submitted to the first two actions requested almost \u20ac433,000, highlighting the highly competitive nature of the call. For Key Action 3, participating universities received applications requesting approximately \u20ac80,000 in total. At URV, the available budget amounts to \u20ac8,000, allowing the university to fund up to two mobility placements.<\/p>\n

URV continues to play a particularly active role in this initiative and is the university that has submitted the highest number of proposals under Key Actions 1 and 2, with a total of 14 applications. This further reinforces its commitment to international collaborative research and to developing new scientific cooperation networks within the Aurora Alliance.<\/p>\n

The evaluation results will be shared with the institutional coordinators of the Aurora universities at the end of August in order to harmonise the scientific and financial assessment criteria. The funding proposal will then be validated by the vice-rectors responsible for research and education at the member universities. The final decision and the list of selected projects are expected to be announced in early September.<\/p>\n

The Aurora Incentive Research and Education Collaboration call is part of the Aurora Alliance\u2019s strategy to strengthen cooperation in research and innovation among its member universities. It supports the creation of new research consortia and the development of projects with the potential to secure funding through future competitive European programmes.<\/span><\/p>\n

This commitment to collaboration comes at a time of ongoing discussions about the future of European research policy. Recently, Aurora joined several joint initiatives calling for a more ambitious budget for the European Union\u2019s next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10)<\/a> and for the continued support of the Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)<\/a> as a key instrument for researcher training, international mobility and talent development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
