The UNICAT ambassadors represent Catalan students to the European Commission and Career Unit, which communicates the job and internship opportunities offered by the European Union to students. The Catalan university representatives of were recently renewed in their posts, the representative from Universitat Rovira i Virgili being Yonathan Borden.
A doctoral student on the URV’s programme in Educational Technology, Borden learned about the post during a talk given by last year’s UNICAT ambassador. He emphasizes that it is a key role for anyone interested in doing internships abroad. “Moreover, it’s a really valuable experience if you’re interested in international relations,” he says.
Now that the representatives of the Catalan universities have been selected, they will receive training for three days in Brussels next February to learn the necessary mechanisms for properly conveying information from the European Union. Before this trip, the ambassadors will hold virtual meetings to share ideas among themselves.
Yonathan Borden explains that students don’t need to have a specific profile to be a UNICAT ambassador or to be studying any particular degree. “Anyone can put themselves forward for it,” Borden states, adding that the key is having time and communication skills. “The most important thing for this project is to raise awareness of the opportunities provided by the European Union,” he reiterates. UNICAT ambassadors form the link between students and the European Commission and Career Unit, hence the importance, according to Borden, of ensuring good communications between both sides.
