The Chinese New Year is one of the most important Eastern holidays. Each year, it is held on a different date, with 2025’s main celebration falling on 29 January, although, the festivities can last an entire week. According to the Chinese tradition, 2025 is the Year of the Snake. This year also commemorates the 30th anniversary since the first group of Chinese students arrived at URV, one of the first universities in the country to offer a specialised training programme for students from China.
This year the Universitat Rovira i Virgili hosted the celebration once again. On Tuesday, 4 February, the Tarragona Association of Chinese Students and Researchers held an event at the URV’s Catalunya Campus, featuring traditional games, a dragon dance, and talks on Chinese culture. Starting at 10:00 AM, students had the chance to participate in various traditional Chinese games, such as mahjong. The winners of each activity earned points that could later be exchanged for rice cookies and other Chinese snacks.
At noon, cultural talks began in the Main Lecture Theatre of the Campus Catalunya offering those interested in Chinese culture the opportunity to explore different aspects of its traditions. This celebration provides URV students with a unique chance to experience cultural festivities from around the world, while socialising and connecting with fellow students from diverse backgrounds.
