On 2 September, “Times Higher Education” (THE) published its World University Rankings 2021, which evaluates the top 1527 universities in the world. In this edition, the URV has been placed in 601-800 band.
The best score is again for the number of citations; i.e. the impact of researchers’ publications, where the URV has been awarded 62.9 points. This scale examines the influence of research by calculating the number of times that a research article is cited by other researchers around the world.
The URV is 9th out of the 50 Spanish universities on the list. Three Catalan universities lead the list of the best universities in Spain: Pompeu Fabra University (152), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (182) and the University of Barcelona (198). The URV shares the position with the remaining Catalan universities.
The 2021 edition of the ranking shows, again, the dominance of British and American universities. The top five positions in the world are occupied by Oxford, Stanford, Harvard, the California Institute of Technology and MIT. The ranking represents 93 countries.
The URV maintains its positions in the Shanghai ranking
In the 2020 edition of the Academic Ranking of Worl Universities (ARWU), published in August, the URV appears in the 501-600 band of the top universities in the world. In this edition of the ranking, which is headed by the universities of Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge, the URV maintains its position from the previous year.
The two indicators where the URV scored highest are number of publications indexed on the Web of Science and academic performance of staff. For the indicator on performance per capita, the URV is the 3rd highest placed Spanish university, behind the Pompeu Fabra University and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Overall, the URV is in 14th place out of the 40 Spanish universities that appear on the list, a position it shares with the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the University of Navarra, the University of the Balearic Islands and the University of Vigo. In Catalonia, the URV is fourth behind the UB (151-200), the UAB (201-300) and the UPF (301-400).
