A book makes accessible the legacy of the most remarkable women economists of all time

Faculty members of ECO-SOS (URV) acknowledge the contributions of women to economics, from the early days of the discipline to the present. These contributions include the work of women who excelled in a male-dominated academy, those who hold managerial positions, and those who have disseminated knowledge from social movements

Dones economistes. Dels inicis de la ciència econòmica a l’actualitat is a book published by Publicacions URV and edited by professors Josep-Maria Arauzo-Carod, José Manuel Giménez Gómez and Cori Vilella Bach that highlight role of women in economics. This is an easy-to-read volume that discloses the biographical features and the academic and scientific legacy of the most remarkable female authors.

In economics, as in so many others sciences, there has been an underrepresentation of women, and those who have committed themselves to it have, in many cases, seen their contribution diminished or ignored. This is why the various authors of the book want to highlight names such as Mary Paley Marshall, Lourdes Beneria, Anne Osborn Krueger or Miren Etxezarreta.

There are a total of 29 women economists, who are introduced in this book in four parts corresponding to different time periods and contributions. The first one is dedicated to the beginnings of economic science; highlights the contribution of seven women who lived between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century and who broke into a scientific field that was beginning and, moreover, reserved for men.

The second part describes the academic contributions of thirteen women born during the 20th century, some of whom are currently active, and who have gained scientific prestige in the midst of an academy still dominated by men.

The third part is dedicated to women economists with managerial responsibilities, with eight women from the second half of the 20th century who have been at the head of institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank. The fourth part is dedicated to women who have put their knowledge at the service of social movements.
