On Friday 15 May the URV awarded an honorary doctorate to Paul Preston, 69, in an academic ceremony in the Auditorium at the Offices of the Rector. The URV is the first university in Catalonia and in the Spanish State to award an honorary doctorate to Paul Preston, who was born in Liverpool and is one of the most widely respected historians of contemporary Spanish history

Agustín Mihi, a researcher with the Nephos researcher group at the URV’s Department of Electronic, Electrical and Automatic Engineering, has been awarded a Starting Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). The grant is worth 1.5 million euros over a period of five years and is for a project to create photonic structures for controlling the propagation of light in emerging technologies such as solar cells, sensors and the next generation of LEDs
The 100 under 50 ranking, which is compiled by the journal “Times Higher Education”, has placed the URV in 80th position in its list of the top 100 universities in the world under the age of 50. It is the second year running that the URV features in the top 100 of this ranking, which has been conducted since 2012

Catalan universities in Brussels
At the beginning of every year, most Catalan universities make a group trip to attend the seminar “What’s New In Brussels?”
The four Chinese students from Shenzhen Polytechnic University (SZPT) had spent a whole semester at our university
The doctoral thesis “From the projected to the transmitted image: The 2.0 construction of tourist destination image and identity in Catalonia” authored by Dr. Estela Mariné Roig under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Salvador Anton Clavé within the Doctoral Program in Tourism and Leisure of the Rovira i Virgili University has been selected as the winner of the International Federation for Information Technologies and Travel & Tourism (IFITT) Thesis Excellence Award for a Doctoral Thesis. Among the competing nominees, the Dr. Estela Mariné´s thesis stood out for its innovativeness, scientific rigor, and relevance to the tourism field

Seminar on the Chinese university system
On 15 January the Association of Catalan Public Universities (ACUP in its Catalan accronym) organized a seminar on “The Chinese university system: finding avenues of collaboration between China and Catalonia”, which was held at the Technical University of Catalonia on its Barcelona Campus.
