In 2016 the Universitat Rovira i Virgili’s Unit of Scientific Communication developed a new educational and communication tool: a series of 12 videos which, with the support of animated illustrations and in little more than 60 seconds, give explanations for common scientific doubts. Researchers from the University have advised on the content of these short audiovisuals, which have been posted on YouTube and are useful for explaining science to students
This autumn has provided plenty of opportunities for the Centre for Hispanic Studies to make contact with some Chinese institutions and to develop existing projects. In October, the URV agents for Asia, Antoni Nomdedeu and Ángel Urquizu, visited four Chinese universities

“Times Higher Education” (THE) has published its ranking of the best universities in the world. As in the previous ranking, the URV has been placed between the positions 401 and 500 out of the 980 universities that are included in the ranking. It is the same position that the URV achieved in the Shanghai ranking, in which it has been included for the first time this year
The professors Antoni Nomdedeu and Àngel Urquizu have established relations with many Asian institutions and have a comprehensive knowledge of different cultures from the continent. They have been appointed by the rector as the URV’s Asian Envoys to assist in the work carried out by the Office of the vice-Rector for Internationalisation
The European Commission has awarded four million euros to the Universitat Rovira i Virgili’s Martí Franquès COFUND project, which will allow it to contract 50 predoctoral researchers. The recruitment process will take place in 2017 and 2018 and the successful candidates will have be awarded three-year contracts. The University will contribute a further four million euros to the project which will conclude in 2021
IBER, the URV spin-off, will offer guided and dramatized tours of the Jewish quarter and other important areas of the medieval city. The aim is for these two tours to become a regular part of the city’s cultural calendar. Furthermore, the members of IBER, who are all researchers at the URV, have applied their knowledge of history and archaeology to the production of a craft beer using the brewing techniques of the ancient Iberians, with the aim of bringing ancient cuisine to the general public
On 1 February Sergio Nasarre participated in the Conference on Covered Bonds in Brussels. He was invited by the Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union of the European Commission to give a presentation, during which he reported on the advantages of harmonising covered bonds across Europe
