The URV doctoral student has won one of the new competitive grants awarded in 2015 by the James S. McDonnell Foundation for doctoral students who research into complex systems. For two years she will further her understanding of statistics in the United States
At the meeting of the University Senate on 26 November the committees entrusted with drafting a new scientific policy plan to substitute the one that has been in force since 2001 were constituted. The proposal for restructuring the courses provided by the faculties and school, and the reports by the Ombuds Officer and on the Quality and Equality plans were also submitted

The University of Buffalo visits the URV
From 23 to 26 November, Professor Stephen Dyson, assistant director of the Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA), visited the URV in the framework of the relations established between the URV and the University of Buffalo (New York, United States). Over the course of four days, he visited archaeological sites, held working meetings and delivered a paper at the ICAC entitled “Where Caesar Never Trod: Classical Archaeology and Ideology in 19th and 20th Century America”.
On 19 November 2015, the Fundació Institut Confuci de Barcelona (FICB) met with eight public Catalan universities. The main goal of the meeting was to agree on further cooperation in the development of cultural activities and educational projects

The General Assembly of the OENODOC and OENOVITI International networks takes place twice a year to discuss joint training and research projects in workgroups. Often these general assemblies are preceded by a symposium on specific topics chosen by the networks’ members
It has been made with three dimensional models of the ear cavities by an international team with the participation of one researcher from IPHES. The study concludes that early hominids had a hearing similar to chimpanzees, but with differences that already closer to modern human. The impact of the previous study about the acoustic capabilities of the preneandertals at Atapuerca has allowed the realization of this research in Australopithecus and Paranthropus
Some 200 students participated in activities organized by the university to help them settle into their new lives for the coming months at the URV. The International Centre and the Language Service provided information and held a series of workshops
For the last twelve years “Times Higher Education” (THE) has published its ranking of the best universities in the world. In the latest edition, the URV is between position 401 and 500 out of the 800 universities around the world that have been included in the ranking. The URV has been ranked in sixth position out of 25 Spanish universities, a position it shares with the Polytechnic of Catalonia, the Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Valencia
The two recent studies were part of the PREDIMED (Prevenció amb Dieta Mediterrània) project. One of them, published in the journal Diabetis Care and coordinated by the URV, concludes that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with olive oil reduces the risk of diabetic patients suffering a retinopathy by 44%. The other study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, associates the Mediterranean diet with a reduction in the risk of suffering from breast cancer. This study was coordinated by the University of Navarre and the URV researchers who took part were led by Jordi Salas-Salvadó
Academics, managers and heads of doctoral training programmes from ten Latin American countries gathered at the Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia) to examine alternative ways of enhancing the supervision of doctoral theses and sharing institutional experiences. The team coordinating the seminar was made up of professors from the URV who have been organizing workshops on doctoral supervision since 2012

This investigation was conducted as part of the PREDIMED study which was designed to examine the impact of consuming a Mediterranean-style diet on prevention of cardiovascular disease. A total of 1868 men and women between 55 and 80 years of age were followed for a median of 3 years during which time dietary analyses were conducted and clinical assessments evaluated
The student Sergi Canals will be embarking on two- year stay at the University of Californias thanks to the Balsells-Generalitat scholarship. For the first time, this programme is providing funding to cover the cost of registration fees and living expenses so that students can study the Master’s programme in Viticulture and Oenology at UC Davis, one of the 10 campuses in the University of California, which is considered one of the most important public university systems in the world
On 28 July the Catalan Government awarded this medal to 16 individuals and 3 institutions. The medal recognises the scientific and technological work of people and entities that have made a major contribution to the development of science and technology in Catalonia
This summer three Study Abroad programmes will take place in the month of July. North-American professors will carry out a summer course in Spanish at the Catalunya campus, and students from the Northeastern University of Boston will do a course in Chemical Engineering at the CTTI and visit locally-based chemical companies. On 20 July students from the University of Cairo and the British University of Egypt began courses in Engineering and Chemical Engineering

A hand-held sensor selective for benzene
The collaboration between the groups of Prof. Pau Ballester at ICIQ and Prof. Eduard Llobet at URV has allowed the development of a sensor highly selective for benzene in air with a lower limit of detection to the extent permitted by law. The work has been published in Advanced Functional Materials and selected for the back cover.
