The URV is the 83rd best university in the world under fifty years of age, according to “Times Higher Education”

The ranking 150 under 50 by Times Higher Education has put the URV in 83rd position in the list of the 150 best universities in the world under the age of fifty. It is the third year running that URV has featured in this ranking, which has been conducted since 2012

The URV has consolidated its position in this ranking which this year has been expanded from 100 to 150 universities under the age of 50 from around the world. The ranking is calculated on the basis of thirteen indicators in the five categories of teaching (learning environment), research (volume and reputation), citations (impact of published research), internationalisation (of students, teaching staff and administrative staff) and transfer of knowledge and innovation. Each of these categories is weighted accordingly when calculating the total score. Compared with last year’s ranking, this time the URV has increased its score in all categories and its overall score has increased by 2.6 points.

According to staff at the journal, this ranking shows how in a comparatively short period these universities have achieved a significant impact in areas such as teaching, research and knowledge transfer, in contrast to older traditional institutions, which have had much longer to establish their reputations.

Times Higher Education uses the same methodology for its 100 under 50 ranking as it does for its World University Rankings. The first 100 under 50 ranking was published in May 2012 with the aim of proving that it is possible to achieve excellence in a relatively short period of time. First position this year has gone to the École Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne (founded in 1969), which retains its position at the top of the ranking from last year. The ranking includes universities from 39 countries around the world and half of the universities in the top ten are less than 30 years old. The United Kingdom has the highest number of institutions in the ranking (25), followed by Australia (19), France (15) and Germany and Spain (10).

Out of the Catalan universities in the ranking, the URV is in third place behind the UAB (12th) and the UPF (15th) and it is the fourth Spanish university in the ranking behind the two aforementioned Catalan institutions and the Autonomous University of Madrid (71st). The 150 under 50 ranking was published on 6 April at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

Times Higher Education is weekly journal published in London and specialising in Higher Education. It is the most important publication of its kind in the United Kingdom and has a high international standing. With the support of Elsevier’s Scopus database, it compiles a series of international university rankings.
