The 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject rank the performance of each university in five areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Health Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. This year the ranking evaluates performance in 48 individual subjects. For the first time in its history, the Universitat Rovira i Virgili has been included on the list, having been ranked in the top 401-450 in the world for Chemistry. The ranking for this discipline includes the top 500 institutions out of the 1,130 that are evaluated.

For its 2018 ranking, the company Quacquarelli Symonds has used four indicators. The first two are global surveys sent to academics and employers to determine the international reputations of higher education institutions. The other two indicators measure the impact of research publications in terms of the number of times they are cited (the indicator in which the URV obtained the highest score) and the H index, which measures both the productivity and citation impact of a scientist’s publications. To determine the overall score, the indicators are weighted, with the greatest weight, 40%, being given to academic reputation, and 20% being given to each of the other indicators.

To be listed on the rankings by subject, an institution must offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, obtain a minimum score for the academic and business reputation indicators and, in the case of Chemistry, have at least 110 publications indexed on Scopus in the last five years.
