From 23 May to 10 June fourteen students from James Madison University participated in the programme entitled Health Care in Spain: a Cross-cultural Exploration of Illness and Wellness at the URV’s Faculty of Nursing. The students were taught about the Spanish health system, learnt Spanish and acquired cultural knowledge

An agreement signed between both universities will enable Japanese students to study at the URV and URV students to travel to Hiroshima. During his first visit to the URV, the rector of HU, Mitsuo Ochi, signed an agreement to increase the existing collaboration between the two universities.
During a wide-ranging visit of Spain, the Széchenyi István University and the Hungarian General Consul in Barcelona made a brief stop on 6 May at the URV and the city of Tarragona to establish future modes of collaboration between both institutions
A study led by the URV has demonstrated that virgin olive oil enriched with its own polyphenols and with those from thyme protects the DNA from oxidation. When these two types of polyphenol are added to olive oil (or indeed any other product) they decrease the risk of DNA damage, which can affect the metabolism and cell reproduction and lead to pathologies such as cancer, among other negative consequences
This is the conclusion of a study conducted by URV researchers Manlio de Domenico and Àlex Arenas, who have analysed the mobility indicators of EU scientists, the capacity of countries to attract new researchers and to retain talent, and the correlation between these measures and GDP investment in research. The results have been published in Nature
This conference is held in different venues in the USA every year. It has also been held twice in Europe, once in Dublin in 2012 and once in Barcelona in 2014. Greece will host the 3rd annual conference in 2016

On 8 April Abdelaziz Jatim visited the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution, and was then welcomed at the Rectorate Building by Josep Anton Ferré, rector of the URV. The IPHES collaborates with the Université Mohamed I Oujda in the fields of archaeology, geology, paleontology and the socialization of science
A mobile application will allow foreign visiting students and staff to communicate with the 112 emergency services number through an app in situations where a voice call is impossible. The app uses pictograms to depict the most common emergencies. The agreement was signed at the Rector’s Offices on 14 April
The professor from the University of Michigan (76) is regarded as a towering figure in the world of chemical engineering for his outstanding career in teaching, research and technology transfer. His ideas have been a source of inspiration for the URV’s School of Chemical Engineering, which prompted the University to award him an honorary doctorate on 15 April in a ceremony at the Rector’s Offices
Researchers at the URV and the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) have discovered why people with obesity not only accumulate glycogen in their muscles and liver, like other people, but also store it in their adipocytes, the cells that make up body fat. These fat cells stop working properly, causing the individual to develop insulin resistance and, potentially, type 2 diabetes. This is the first time that this metabolic pathway has been described and it makes glycogen a new player within the pathology of obesity
IBER, the URV spin-off, will offer guided and dramatized tours of the Jewish quarter and other important areas of the medieval city. The aim is for these two tours to become a regular part of the city’s cultural calendar. Furthermore, the members of IBER, who are all researchers at the URV, have applied their knowledge of history and archaeology to the production of a craft beer using the brewing techniques of the ancient Iberians, with the aim of bringing ancient cuisine to the general public
The ranking 150 under 50 by Times Higher Education has put the URV in 83rd position in the list of the 150 best universities in the world under the age of fifty. It is the third year running that URV has featured in this ranking, which has been conducted since 2012
Thirteen Japanese students participated in a Study Abroad training activity in Tarragona from 12 to 20 March in which they formed two groups. Whilst the first group studied various aspects of human mobility and human rights, the second investigated nursing care and visits to health facilities in the Tarragona area
The Confucius Institute Foundation of Barcelona has recognised the URV as an authorised centre for the official Chinese language tests, which will take place in June and will be repeated once every year. The decision was announced as part of the agreement that the URV has had with this institution since 2014. The Institute’s directors visited the University on 11 March after holding a meeting to discuss strengthening and expanding the partnership between the two institutions

The universities signed two collaboration agreements on 4th of February at the Rector’s Offices of the URV. The first agreement establishes doctoral training for the academic staff of the UVM within the framework of the URV’s doctoral programmes. The second establishes a framework for joint development cooperation and social innovation
